Read with Oxford Stage 1 is for children who are ready to start learning to read. They will enjoy listening to stories and will be beginning to recognise letter sounds and read simple words.

The stories have been carefully levelled to support you and your child through the early stages of learning to read. The Phonics stories provide phonics-based reading practice, while storybooks use everyday language to help broaden your child's wider reading experience. All the stories feature much-loved characters and humorous illustrations, as well as tips for reading together and fun activities.

Children at Read with Oxford Stage 1 can usually:

• Enjoy sharing and talking about books.
• Join in with songs and nursery rhymes.
• Recognise most of the letters of the alphabet and know one simple sound for each letter.
• Read a few simple words by sounding out and blending (for example, s-a-t, sat).
• Start to recognise a few common tricky words like ‘no’ and ‘the’.
• Talk about a story they have read or listened to.
• Relate books to experiences in their own lives.
• Concentrate for about 5–10 mins.
